CVS Opens at The Portals

CVS is now open at The Portals, the large mixed-use development project along Maryland Avenue. The store actually opened a week ago, but I noticed the Grand Opening signs yesterday when I drove by the site. Back in the Spring, we reported that CVS was slated to open at the Portals, after Madison Retail Group signed the tenant to a 10,000 square foot space. I'm sure the workers in the office buildings and the neighboring Mandarin Oriental Hotel are happy to see the opening of CVS, the largest retailer to open to date at The Portals. CVS is located in the 3rd phase building, as seen in the above photo. Other retailers at The Portals include Starbucks, Potbelly's, and a pay-by-the-pound food provider, as well as the restaurants at the Mandarin. Here are the hours of operation for CVS:
Monday - Friday: 7am - 9pm
Saturday - Sunday: 9am - 9pm

Thanks for the update on the newest SW CVS. Would be great to shop in a real drugstore instead of a double-wide trailer. Who knows...we could run into a celeb who's staying at the Mandarin!

As one of the workers in the Phase 1 building, I checked out the CVS on Friday 9/18. It's well appointed, with nice aisles and a good-size grocery-type area with refrigerator & freezer cases. Surprisingly, though, there is no pharmacy!

I actually like the renegade M St SW CVS/BofA combi-trailer. It feels custom built and less cookie cutter than the average ones I'm used to visiting. Unique. I was surprised they bothered to pay to keep business running by building up new trailers rather than just waiting till the new development would give them an opportunity to just lease the new space.

Update on the Portals CVS: I talked to the manager last night, and asked about the lack of a pharmacy. She said it was because of their proximity to the L'Enfant Plaza CVS, which does have one. The Portals CVS will likely get a pharmacy eventually, she said, but not for several years.
